How Does Numerology Work?
Numerology works by reducing your date of birth and name to a few key numbers, then reading those numbers against each other.
The basic principle
Numerology rests on one idea: numbers carry qualities, and the numbers attached to you reflect your own qualities. Your date of birth is fixed, so it describes what you were born with. Your name is chosen, so it describes how you present yourself, and can be adjusted.
Step 1: reduction
Most numbers in numerology are reduced to a single digit by adding their digits. 47 becomes 4 + 7 = 11, which becomes 1 + 1 = 2. The exceptions are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which some readings keep as they are.
Step 2: calculation of the core numbers
- From the date of birth: the Mulank (day of birth), the Bhagyank (whole date) and the Lo Shu grid
- From the name: the name number, using a letter chart such as the Chaldean or Pythagorean system
- From the current date: the personal year and month
Step 3: reading the numbers together
This is where numerology becomes useful. A single number says little on its own. A reading asks:
- Do the Mulank and Bhagyank agree, or pull in different directions?
- Does the name number support the date of birth numbers?
- Which numbers are missing or repeated in the Lo Shu grid?
- What does the current personal year favour?
Numbers relate to each other through their ruling planets. Friendly planets support each other, so their numbers are compatible. Opposing planets create friction.
Step 4: practical suggestions
A good reading ends with actions: a name spelling, a number to look for in a phone or vehicle, a favourable date, or a habit that builds a missing quality.
Is numerology science or belief?
Numerology is not a science in the sense of physics or medicine, and it should not replace professional advice. It is a symbolic system that many people find gives structure to reflection and decisions. The most honest way to judge it is by whether its descriptions and suggestions are useful to you.
Frequently asked questions
Why do different numerology websites give different numbers?
They use different letter charts and methods. Always check which system is being used.
Do master numbers always stay unreduced?
In life path readings they are usually kept as 11, 22 or 33. In the Lo Shu grid the reduced digit is used.
Can numerology predict events?
It shows tendencies and favourable timing, not fixed events.
