What Is Vedic Numerology?

Vedic numerology, often called Indian numerology, reads your numbers through the nine planets of Indian astrology.

Numbers and grahas

Vedic numerology links each digit to a graha:

Number Graha English
1 Surya Sun
2 Chandra Moon
3 Guru (Brihaspati) Jupiter
4 Rahu North node of the Moon
5 Budh Mercury
6 Shukra Venus
7 Ketu South node of the Moon
8 Shani Saturn
9 Mangal Mars

The three core numbers

Mulank is the day of birth reduced to one digit. It is called the psychic or soul number and describes temperament.

Bhagyank is the whole date of birth reduced. It is called the destiny number and describes the course of life.

Namank is the name number, usually calculated with the Chaldean chart.

Friendship between numbers

Because each number has a planet, the relationships between planets in Indian astrology decide whether two numbers are friendly. The Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Mars form one friendly group, so 1, 2, 3 and 9 support each other. Mercury, Venus and Saturn form another, with Rahu and Ketu often grouped with them, so 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 support each other.

How it differs from Western numerology

  • More weight on the day of birth (Mulank)
  • Planetary relationships decide compatibility
  • Remedies linked to the ruling planets
  • Close ties with astrology and traditional practices

What Vedic numerology is used for

Name correction, baby naming, business names, marriage compatibility, mobile and vehicle numbers, and choosing dates. Most numerology practised in India today follows this framework. See Vedic numerology for a consultation.

The grid uses every non-zero digit of the date, plus the Bhagyank, plus the Mulank when the birth day is 10 or more. Schools differ on this; a consultation reads the full chart with your name.
